The Cast of FX’s Snowfall Host Screening at Regal South Beach on July 28, 2017

Have you been watching this show?! Well, If you haven’t you need to start!

I attended the screening for FX’s Snowfall that was hosted by the cast a few weeks ago at the Regal Cinema theater on South Beach. Saw a few familiar faces of Miami’s taste maker’s, power players and obviously the cast of Snowfall. Shout out to my girl Elora Mason for the plug!

The heart of Snowfall, John Singleton’s new FX series about the origins of the crack epidemic, is Franklin Saint (Damson Idris), a smart, kindhearted teenager who takes care of his mother, keeps the neighborhood kids in line, works nights in a bodega, and sells weed on the side for his uncle Jerome (Amin Joseph). One day, a white friend from his fancy high school in the Valley recruits Franklin to procure more cocaine for his pool party. “You afraid to go get it, so send a black guy, right?” Franklin says, quizzically. “I’ll be the black guy. Shit, I’m always the black guy.” Which is how he finds himself in the house of a comical Israeli cocaine dealer (Andrew Howard) who only sells in bulk. And senses an opportunity.

Snowfall is full of moments like this—scenes and interludes that attempt to put the complex racial and geopolitical dynamics of the 1980s drug trade in context. Franklin is just one of a revolving cast of characters who see the growing enthusiasm for cocaine in the U.S. as a way to further their own ambitions, while staying willfully blind to the consequences. There’s Teddy McDonald (Carter Hudson), a disgraced CIA agent who gets involved in an off-the-books operation with Nicaraguan Contras to try and resurrect his career. And Lucia (Emily Rios), the niece of a drug lord who stages a robbery to fund her own business. In its sprawling consideration of the many different players who kickstarted an epidemic, Snowfall ticks all the boxes of a prestige drug drama. But its characters often feel like ciphers, generic stand-ins for the various factions implicated in cocaine’s rise. Singleton can’t quite get to the core of why these sympathetic and intelligent people would be so willing to risk everything for a business whose ugliest elements seem to horrify them.

I got a chance to interview a few of the cast members on the red carpet check it out!

BLOGGER LABELS RIHANNA “PLUS SIZE” IN BODY-SHAMING HEADLINE

RIHANNA

Singer, actress, clothing and shoe designer, perfumer and humanitarian Rihanna Fenty has now been labeled plus-size for whatever reason. The past few months it seems people have felt the need to body shame her. Most notably blogger Sandra Rose is the latest to stamp Rihanna with the label of plus-size.

During her latest promotional tour stop for her upcoming film “Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets” in Los Angeles the star wore a Giambatista Valli Couture gown.

Sandra Rose a blogger notorious for using salacious content/titles to drive traffic to her site, labeled the recap of the movie premiere  ‘Plus Size Singer Rihanna Stuns at ‘Valerian’ Premiere’.

The Rihanna Navy didn’t take to kindly to the post and dear old Sandra’s mentions were in shambles (po lil tink tink). to which she quickly followed up with another post to address the controversy.

In her post ‘fanMAIL: Rihanna is Not Plus-Size – You are BIGGER Than Her’ Sandra uses the bs “fashion industry” standard approach to justify her comments.

“If Rihanna is not plus-size, what is she? Let’s examine the fashion industry standard for plus-size models. According to PLUS Model magazine, plus size is defined as sizes 10-14; super-size is sizes 16 and up.

At 5-ft-9 and about 160 pounds, Rihanna fits the category of plus-size. She’s still a beautiful young lady, but as Sir Mix-a-Lot would say, “Red beans and rice didn’t miss her.”

A bit harsh and ignorant to say the least. As a plus size woman I’m sure we can agree that Rihanna is not Plus Size. She has however, gained a few pounds. So when did she become fat, or even over weight & if she was, what is the big damn deal???

LOVED IT! #STEPTHEMOVIE A MUST SEE!

step

So,  yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the premiere of a very special movie. Directed by Amanda Lipitz, the movie, featuring Blessin Giraldo, Cori Grainger, Tayla Solomon, Gari McIntyre, and Paula Dofat is more like a documentary which documents the senior year of a girls’ high school step team in inner-city Baltimore, as they try to become the first in their families to attend college. The girls strive to make their dancing a success against the backdrop of social unrest.

The cast was present at the premiere and there was a question and answer session. This is all apart of the American Black Film festival which is being held in Miami June 14 – June 18.

Okay, back to the movie! I must say I left the the Miami Beach Cinematheque inspired, the movie takes you through a gamut of emotions and honestly I saw myself in each of the girls. I could even relate to the each of the Mother’s struggles. I am a single Mother raising children and I’ve been in situations that mirror the women in this movies lives so much so that I left the theater feeling inspired to keep going.

Some how this movie spoke to me and let me know that my struggles as a Woman, Mother, Friend, Daughter & Companion were not just exclusively my own but that we all struggle and though we may struggle our situations are not impossible to overcome.

Go see this movie! STEP will be in theaters August 4, 2017

Check out the trailer…
